ABOUT
THE CALIFORNIA NEWCOMER NETWORK
The California Newcomer Network (CANN) is a collaborative hub committed to supporting newcomer youth across California. Our mission is to facilitate the creation of inclusive environments where newcomer students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We provide educators, community leaders, and service providers with access to resources, knowledge, and innovative solutions for working with students from immigrant and refugee backgrounds.
Originally conceived as Efraín's Innovator project during the 2016 Google for Education Innovator Academy in Mexico City, CANN officially launched in the spring of 2020 to address the needs of educators teaching newcomers in distance learning across the state during the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by Deedy Camarena's encouragement to expand beyond the Central Valley, CANN connects, equips, and empowers passionate educational leaders statewide.
As CANN continues to grow, we aim to develop resources and forge partnerships across education, healthcare, immigration law, and community services. Together, we can ensure that every newcomer youth has access to the comprehensive support they need to succeed in California’s diverse and dynamic communities.
