This CalNEW webinar for California educators and community partners features two trainings. In the first, the LA County Office of Education will review current law, safety best practices, and clear response procedures for school sites — both when immigration enforcement officials arrive on campus and when they request student or family information. In the second, Oakland International High School Learning Lab will provide instruction in organizing community foot patrols that offer an additional layer of security during periods of heightened enforcement activity.

Californians Together, The Children’s Partnership

This CalNEW webinar gives school and district staff a current picture of public benefits eligibility and public charge rules as they apply to immigrant children and families. Presenters from Californians Together and The Children's Partnership, both members of the All in for Safe Schools coalition, will cover what has changed, what has not, and how staff can respond when families ask whether accessing benefits puts them at risk.

Immigrant Legal Defense

Attorneys from Immigrant Legal Defense walk school and district professionals through recent developments in immigration law and policy, and what those changes mean for students and families. The session is designed to help education staff stay current and respond to family questions with accurate, timely information.

Internationals Network

Internationals Network supports schools and academies serving newcomer multilingual students nationwide, and is expanding its work through California's Secondary School Redesign Pilot. This session introduces the Internationals approach to building newcomer academies within comprehensive high schools, with English language development integrated across content areas. Participants leave with resources and strategies they can adapt to their own sites.

Loyola Marymount University, Migration Policy Institute

This CalNEW webinar features two research presentations for schools serving newcomers. First, Loyola Marymount University shares findings from its evaluation of the California Newcomer Education and Well-Being (CalNEW) Program, with attention to program impact and promising practices observed across participating districts. Second, theThe Migration Policy Institute will unpack what current immigration policy and available data can — and can't — tell us about newcomer arrivals, and what California educators should be watching for as enrollment patterns shift in the years ahead.
